Lake Winnipesaukee - The smile of the great spirit.
“Winnipesaukee” has been translated from Abenaki to the English language many different ways. Abenaki was exclusively an oral language, thus there has been much disagreement about its meaning, from “The Smile of the Great Spirit” and “Beautiful Water in a High Place” to, simply, “Lakes Region.”
Lake Winnipesaukee is backed by the Ossipee Mountains on the northeast and the Belknap Mountains on the southwest side of the lake. At 9.5 miles wide and 28 miles long, New Hampshire’s largest lake boasts well over 250 islands, 200 miles of shoreline, and a wildlife preserve.
